Azure Resource Mover – How does it work!

Azure Resource Mover is a new offering within the Azure echo system. It became a global service available for use in all regions at the start of March 2021. It allows the ability to move resources across regions, subscriptions, and resource groups. This is an excellent feature for organizations who want to use a hero region like Europe West, but then move to another region closer to customers. That could be for several reasons such as reducing latency, a new requirement for data residency, or the ability to bring a DR region closer to the customers.

How does it work

To start it off, you will need to make sure that you have a subscription Owner access. Depending on what move method you will be doing, it might simply be a resource group move within the same subscription or you might need Owner access to the other subscription.

Here it is going to get really complicated. You go to the resources that you would like to move and select them.

From here you simply pick from the dropdown menu.

Pick the subscription, region, and resource group you would like to move to.

Depending on the resource(s), it will first see if it can move it with no issues, if it can it will allow you to go to the next screen.

The review screen is like any other screen to just confirm that you are ready to migrate. After a short period it migrates your resource(s) to the target resource group.

Recap

In case the above was complicated, the following is outlined on how the process works.

Summary

Azure Resource Mover is a still-growing product, but it allows you to move resources across subscriptions, regions, or resource groups. I hope to see this feature grow and allow for more migration offers such as going from CSP to MCA.
